Katherine Litz in “The Glyph” (performance)
Black Mountain College, Summer 1951
Choreography: Katherine Litz
Screen: Charles Oscar, based on a painting by Ben Shahn
Music: Lou Harrison, composed to a poem “The Glyph” by
Charles Olson.
This photo and a number of others taken from the same photo series of Katherine Litz are in the Archives of the Library of Performing Arts at Lincoln Center in New York City. The honor is surely enough to make me remember every detail, but the fact is I never forgot.
Wordlessly, she let this unknown registrant hover over a long practice session with a Leica. Session over, she told me she heard "a click" exactly at the heart of each gesture. She asked for copies and insisted on paying for those used a year afterward.
Most important, she validated my intuition and senses and I remember.
