Music Shed, Black Mountain College

1951
Archival pigment print made by Palm Press Inc. Made after a unique vintage 1951 gelatin silver print, approved and signed by the artist.

The Music Practice Room (also known as the Music Shed and the Music Hut) was designed by architect Paul Beidler in May 1945, and built with student help in June. Beidler was a former student of Frank Lloyd Wright's at Taliesin and taught at BMC for the 1945 summer session. The building was 12 x12 feet square and made from concrete, masonry, wood, and glass. Although three other Music Practice Rooms were planned, this was the only one actually built. It was situated in a pine grove south of the Dining Hall on campus and photographed here by Jo Sandman in the summer of 1951. The building no longer stands.
