When I was eight, I discovered (helped by my parents, librarians, and teachers) a source of mysterious perpetual motion: the artist and storyteller in myself. To play with words and images, colors and designs, was to play with the stuff that mattered most deeply to me–my own feelings, a passion for meaning, and dreams (given me by my parents) of a better life for all. It’s a wonder to me how my childhood play has become my adult work, and my books an offering of what moved and moves me most.
