I was reluctant to leave Black Mountain at the end of the 1952 summer institute. For me it was such a formative and dynamic period in my life.
The creative energy that I felt through that summer is very difficult to express in words. Emotionally I wanted to stay on at the college simply to assimilate the varied creative influences that seemed almost overwhelming at the time.
But, alas, I was scheduled to begin graduate study at Indiana University in September.
It continues to surprise me how vivid and poignant my Black Mountain memories are after all these years.
