The creator of this shawl is unknown, but it may be made by Joan Stack Sewell, who was a student at Black Mountain College. Fellow BMC alumna Janet Heling Roberts may have purchased it from Sewell at the BMC campus during the mid-1940s, but its provenance is not certain.
