Gregory Masurovsky

1929 – 2009

Gregory Masurovksy was born in New York City in 1929. Based on his brother's recommendation, he attended Black Mountain College at the age of 17 in 1947. He studied painting with Ilya Bolotwsky and Josef Albers, finding BMC to be an “environment of modernity and the artistic avant-garde.” He learned as much about life as about art from the student base at BMC, most of whom were several years older than him.

After BMC, Masurovsky studied at the Art Students League of New York. He later settled in Paris with his wife, where he became immersed in the vibrant artistic energy of the city. He remained in Paris until his death in 2009. In 1961 he won the Critic’s Prize for Drawing at the Paris Biennal. In 1963 he won the International Jury Prize for Etching from the same exhibition. During his lifetime, he had numerous solo exhibitions worldwide.

Masurovksy’s black and white pen and ink drawings are held in high esteem. The shading and shifting of tonalities achieved with his slim pen lines suggest a range of colors that is not physically present.
