Mary Fitton Fiore

1924 – 2017

Mary Fitton first became interested in attending Black Mountain College after seeing an ad in The New Republic magazine. She attended on the GI Bill and took drawing, voice, and writing classes and felt at home in the community of creative thinkers and practitioners. She fell in love with her drawing teacher, Joe Fiore, and they married and had their first child while still at the college. When one of the two cooks left, Mary stepped up and cooked one day a week for the whole school for a year.

After BMC, Joe and Mary moved to New York City, where they lived for the rest of their lives.
