M.C. Richards Collection
M.C. Richards (1916–1999) was a poet, philosopher, teacher, and artist who taught literature and drama at Black Mountain College from 1945 to 1951. The only female faculty member with a terminal degree, she played a pivotal role in the college community, balancing leadership transitions and co-founding The Black Mountain Review. Richards contributed to John Cage's Theater Piece No. 1 and later returned to BMC as a student to study pottery and sculpture. Her transformative experiences at BMC inspired her interest in communal living and a lifelong career teaching and lecturing. Her notable works include Centering in Poetry, Pottery, and the Person (1964) and The Crossing Point (1973). After leaving BMC, she joined the Gate Hill Cooperative, an intentional community in Stony Point, New York, where she lived and collaborated with many of her former BMC colleagues.
This collection includes Richards' pottery, poems, paintings, and books as well as some photographs and ephemera. These works span her BMC era, her time at Stony Point, and beyond.
